SAN JUAN (AP) - Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) Sen. Fernando Martin filed his first piece of legislation seeking to declare Spanish the official language of the Commonwealth.

The measure establishes that Spanish will be the language to be used in all departments, municipalities and other political subdivisions of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government.

In 1993, former Gov. Pedro Rossello approved a law making Spanish and English the official languages in Puerto Rico.

Rossello revoked a 1991 law signed by former Gov. Rafael Hernandez Colon that made Spanish the official language in the government.

Meanwhile, Senate President Antonio Fas Alzamora has filed a resolution to investigate the need to amend or reformulate the law that establishes English and Spanish as Puerto Rico's official languages.

Gov. Sila Calderon on Wednesday said she will keep her campaign promise to remove the police Riot Squad from Vieques. Still, she said she won't leave the area unsecured to comply with the presidential agreement entered into between outgoing President Bill Clinton and former Gov. Pedro Rossello.

She also issued her first two executive orders prohibiting the display of any political symbol by government employees and restoring the Commonwealth name to all government documents.

The pro-statehood Rossello administration had changed the official government documents to read Government of Puerto Rico, instead of Commonwealth.
