LETTERSSouth Florida Sun-SentinelPuerto Ricans Are Americans, Tooby Fernando RuizJuly 22, 2001 July 22 2001 Re the June 29 letter, "Let Puerto Rico go its own way": I would like to give the letter writer a little history lesson. After the Spanish-American war of 1898, Puerto Rico became a possession of the U.S. The U.S. wanted and needed it because of its strategic location. We are born American citizens, who fought in World War II. We had the 65th infantry, which was composed solely of Puerto Ricans. I enlisted in '66. We gave our lives and blood, which is more precious than gold, for the U.S. We are proud being Puerto Ricans and proud of being Americans, no hyphen necessary. For the past 40-plus years, we have been an industrial park composed of almost all the American companies whose money comes back to the U.S. As for becoming a state, we have three political parties. The Independent Party is 5 percent to 10 percent; the Statehood Party and Commonwealth Party are about equally split. At present, as in the past, the Statehood Party is the governing party. The writer sounds like we didn't vote to become a state. We have had that opportunity for more than 40 years, as Hawaii did. Do some research before giving an opinion; maybe then it will be a more knowledgeable one. Fernando Ruiz
