CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Resorts To Provide 200 Rooms Per Night For Baseball Players And Officials And 50 Rooms Per Night For Some Officials And Press By EVELYN GUADALUPE-FAJARDO April 3, 2003 Wyndham El San Juan Hotel & Casino and the InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino are two of the islands San Juan metro-area hotels that have secured business from the Major League Baseball (MLB) organization. CARIBBEAN BUSINESS learned Wyndham El San Juan was awarded a contract to supply 200 rooms per night for the MLB players and officials, while InterContinental San Juan signed a contract to supply 50 rooms per night for some officials and press. The Montreal Expos will play three home stands covering seven series at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey. The Expos will play a 10-game home stand in San Juan this month, with games against the New York Mets (April 11 to 14), Atlanta Braves (April 15 to 17), and Cincinnati Reds (April 18 to 20). The majority of the MLB games will take place during what is usually a slower time of the year for tourism, as the high tourism season ends April 15. It was reported last week that the New York Mets, scheduled to be the Expos first contenders in San Juan, picked Starwood Hotels & Resorts as the teams official hotel company for the 2003 baseball season, which began March 30. The agreement calls for the team to stay at a Starwood property when it plays on the road. The Starwood brands are Westin, Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, and W Hotels. That being the case, the Mets normally would be staying at The Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort & Golf Club on the island. However, Teresa Martinez, public relations director of the Westin Rio Mar, said the Mets had elected to stay in a metro-area hotel because of their hectic practice itinerary.
