Getting Serious His Divorce Final, Marc Anthony Goes Shopping For A Ring, As He And Jennifer Lopez Start Thinking Marriage June 14, 2004 By Michelle Tauber; Kathy Ehrich and Joanne Fowler/New York City, Linda; Trischitta/Miami, Kwala Mandel/Los Angeles and Alba ; Reyes/ Santo Domingo People Magazine In recent months Jennifer Lopez has made one thing clear: J.Lo is a no-no. But while she aims to shed her brand-building handle--like Bennifer wisecracks and that pink-diamond ring, J.Lo is so six months ago--she's been less forthcoming about her new nickname, Lola. The moniker makes its public debut in the liner notes for Amar Sin Mentiras, the Spanish-language album due June 8 from Marc Anthony, Lopez's boyfriend since early this year. The album's title- -in English, To Love Without Lies--is provocative enough: The sentiment comes on the heels of Anthony's June 1 divorce from Dayanara Torres, the former Miss Universe from whom he split just before his romance with Lopez became public. But it's the liner notes that really have tongues wagging--especially Anthony's swooning shout-out to "Lola," which sources close to the couple confirm is what he calls Lopez. "My endless inspiration," writes the singer. "My life has been one of dreams since the second you walked through that door." With that, Anthony let his feelings be known--and now that his divorce from Torres, his wife of four years, is final, the road seems smooth for Anthony and the artist formerly known as J.Lo to move their romance into higher gear. Especially intriguing: the square-cut diamond ring Lopez has been spotted wearing on her left middle finger. One source close to Lopez says that the new bauble is a "friendship ring" from Anthony, "but it's setting the stage for the other ring--the engagement ring." The source adds that Anthony has been spotted browsing at L.A. jeweler Neil Lane and that Lopez has already sought the advice of Sharon Sacks, the planner who worked on both her wedding to Cris Judd and the aborted Ben Affleck nuptials. "They're engaged unofficially," says the source. "There's talk of a wedding." Asked when, the source replies, "Within six months." But for now it's just talk--don't be fooled by the rock she's got. "Are they engaged? I'm pretty sure they're not," says Lynda Lopez, Jennifer's sister. Nonetheless, those close to Lopez, 34, and Anthony, 35, say they're serious. "They're in a good place," says a source, adding that Lopez, currently shooting the comedy Monster-in- Law with Jane Fonda, "is at her happiest because she's working. . . . After work she goes home to a guy that adores her. What's not to love?" Still, with two failed marriages--and one failed Bennifer-- behind her, the swiftness with which Lopez jumped back into a serious relationship seems to establish the glamor-loving star as a sort of 21st-century Elizabeth Taylor in search of Mr. Right. "I think she's convinced that the guy [she's with] is the right guy, [every] time," says her friend, photographer Gilles Bensimon. "Everything she does, she puts all her effort into it. I think she wants to build a family with somebody." In Anthony--born Marco Antonio Muniz--Lopez finally may have found her match. "She grew up watching West Side Story starring a lot of triple-threat performers, and that's what Marc is," a source says of Anthony, who's acted on Broadway and recently costarred in the Denzel Washington drama Man on Fire. "He's not a pretty-boy Ricky Martin type. Marc has texture and a depth in a kind of career that Jennifer really wants to have, and she respects that in him." And his affections for Lopez, whom he briefly dated in the late '90s, seem to have some history. "Is Marc head over heels in love with her?" asks a source close to them. "Yes. He always has been." It's not hard to see the bond between the two. After all, his Marco-from-the-block story mirrors Lopez's in many ways: Like her, he was raised in New York City by parents of Puerto Rican descent. While a preteen Lopez was honing her dance skills, Anthony was pursuing a singing career; by his mid-teens he was working as a backup singer. "I could do it, but I wasn't the marketable cutie- pie," Anthony said of his early gigs. "I was the one with 'personality.'" That personality--plus an outsized talent--helped the slight (5'7") singer break into the big time, just as Lopez's career was doing the same. In 1998 the pair appeared together in Anthony's video for "No Me Conoces" ("You Don't Know Me"); it was around that time they dated. But Lopez was headed for other high-profile pairings--first with P. Diddy, then with choreographer Cris Judd-- and in '00 Anthony married Torres, 29, with whom he has two sons, Cristian, 3, and Ryan, 9 months. (He also has a daughter from a previous relationship.) In July '02 Anthony and Torres separated, only to renew their vows five months later. "I tend to gravitate to doing romantic things," Anthony told PEOPLE in 2001. The reunion would prove short-lived, and in February Anthony was hit with a paternity suit. (DNA evidence has excluded Anthony as the father; the case is still pending.) But it was the timing of the renewed Lopez-Anthony pairing--in January, just as Bennifer broke up--that raised the most eyebrows. Her new love "isn't about spiting Ben," says a source close to the couple. "Whatever it was that was there is gone. His name never comes up. Never." Still, the source also says that the end of Lopez's relationship with Affleck "changed the rules for her. She got burned by Ben Affleck. She wanted that relationship to really work." No doubt she feels the same way about her current relationship. So could Anthony make husband No. 3? "She's serious about the relationship," says an insider. "They're definitely going to get married." Pause. "Unless they break up before then." SOUL MATES? For two people who have made a veritable art form of ducking the press--slipping in and out of events separately and taking secret trips together--the lyrics, about lovers who long for privacy, seem especially telling: Let's hide from the crowd Jennifer Lopez Marries Marc Anthony In Beverly Hills June 7, 2004 BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP) - Jennifer Lopez reportedly married Marc Anthony in a small ceremony at her home, less than six months after she ended her high-profile engagement to Ben Affleck. Both Us Weekly and People magazines reported Saturday's nuptials. Lopez's spokesman Rob Shuter told The Associated Press on Sunday that he had no immediate comment, and neither magazine published comment from either Shuter or a representative for Anthony. For Lopez, 34, the marriage would mark her third - the first was to waiter Ojani Noa in 1997, the second to dancer Cris Judd in 2001. Noa lasted a little more than a year; Judd for nine months. Anthony, the Latin singing sensation, just divorced former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres last week in the Dominican Republic. The pair, wed in 2000, have two young sons, and he has a daughter from a previous relationship. Lopez - the singer-actress-fashonista more famously known as J.Lo - has kept her romance with Anthony, 34, decidedly more low-key than her engagement to Affleck, which was a magnet for tabloid attention. The 18-month "Bennifer" romance featured a near-wedding, but it was scuttled at the last minute with the couple blaming excessive media attention. Lopez also famously dated Sean "P. Diddy" Combs - back when he was still "Puffy" - for two years before the couple broke up in February 2001. It was unclear when Anthony and Lopez were engaged. The two first dated in 1999 and had been seen together since Lopez's split from Affleck. Lopez had reportedly been wearing a dazzling new diamond engagement ring for several weeks. White tents and an altar were set up outside Lopez's house on Saturday, with folding chairs on both sides of an aisle, Us reported. The two were married shortly after 6 p.m. before about 40 guests, Us reported. Lopez reportedly wore Neil Lane jewelry and a dress with a veil. Lopez's mother, Guadalupe, arrived at the event in a limousine with Anthony, the network television program "Entertainment Tonight" reported. Anthony and Lopez were both born in New York. Us Weekly reported that Saturday's wedding was coordinated by Sharon Sachs, who also planned Lopez's wedding to Judd and the canceled wedding to Affleck in Santa Barbara. Lopez was on screen most recently as Affleck's wife in "Jersey Girl." She dies minutes into the film. Anthony, a salsa superstar who has also had crossover success, is releasing a Spanish album, "Amar Sin Mentiras," on Tuesday. He has also dabbled in acting, and appeared in the recent Denzel Washington film "Man on Fire." Anthony Won't Confirm Marriage To J.Lo June 8, 2004 NEW YORK (AP) -- Saying his personal life is off-limits, singer Marc Anthony refused to confirm Tuesday whether he's married to Jennifer Lopez. During an appearance on NBC's ``Today'' show, co-host Matt Lauer asked the Latin singer how he'd spent his weekend. ``I see where you're going with this, and I'm going to preface it with just saying -- y'all know I don't talk about my personal life,'' Anthony said. Lauer replied: ``So, I -- do I need to congratulate you?'' ``Yeah, I have two albums coming out, man. Absolutely. And I would appreciate it,'' the 34-year-old singer said. Anthony, who performed in Rockefeller Plaza, was wearing what appeared to be a wedding band on his left hand. When Lauer continued to ask whether a wedding had taken place Saturday at Lopez's home in Beverly Hills, Calif., Anthony responded, ``That would fall into the category of personal. And that's where I'm going to leave it.'' Later that morning, Anthony continued to evade marriage questions from the five women on ABC's ``The View.'' ``I've always been just so private and I've kept what's mine, mine,'' Anthony said. ``It's still hard for me to understand, what is to me, the morbid fascination with celebrity,'' he added. ``I just want to sing, I want to work on my music, I want to make my movies, that's all I want to do. I understand, you know, the interest but I really don't understand the fascination with it.'' Anthony said no matter what may be written about him and Lopez, he plans to ``let it go. I have nothing to say about anything. My life is my life, that's the only thing I have.'' Rob Shuter, Lopez's publicist for about a year, said Tuesday that he stopped representing her Monday evening. He referred calls to Lopez's manager, Simon Fields. Asked whether Lopez married over the weekend, Fields told The Associated Press on Tuesday, ``No comment. ... We don't comment on her personal life.'' Others do have something to say about her personal life, though -- namely the 1,200 people who responded to a recent online poll about Lopez's loves. When the Trio cable channel and Star magazine asked which relationship they wish had succeeded, 31 percent said Lopez's two-year romance with Sean ``P. Diddy'' Combs. Nearly 29 percent preferred seeing her with Ben Affleck. Dancer Cris Judd, her second husband, got 27 percent of the vote. Anthony came in last with less than 14 percent. (The poll, by the way, was part of Trio's monthlong look at ``FLOPS!: The Great Failures,'' which celebrates pop culture phenomena that went horribly wrong.) This would be the third marriage for the 33-year-old Lopez -- the first was to waiter Ojani Noa in 1997, the second to Judd in 2001. Noa lasted a little more than a year; Judd for nine months. The singer-actress also was engaged to Affleck, her ``Gigli'' co-star, but they canceled their plans in September 2003 amid a huge media frenzy and broke up in January. Anthony divorced former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres last week in the Dominican Republic. They married in 2000 and have two young sons; Anthony also has a daughter from a previous relationship. His new album, ``Amar Sin Mentiras,'' means ``To Love Without Lies'' in Spanish. ------ On the Net: http://www.marcanthonyonline.com/ Newlywed J-Lo Expecting Baby: Report June 8, 2004 NEW YORK, June 8 (AFP) - Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez is expecting a baby with new husband Grammy-winning salsa star Marc Anthony, The New York Post reported Tuesday. Anthony, meanwhile, is refusing even to saw whether the couple got married at the weekend at Lopez's Hollywood home. A guest at the marriage told a source quoted by the paper that the curvaceous film star, who broke off her highly publicized engagement with film star Ben Affleck just a few months ago, was expecting. Another friend confirmed that Lopez has been informing friends of her pregnancy, the New York tabloid said. The marriage has so far only been reported by the US celebrity media. Anthony refused to confirm it when he made an appearance on NBC's Today Show on Tuesday to sing one of his new songs. "I see where you're going with this, and I'm going to preface it with just saying - y'all know I don't talk about my personal life," Anthony said. The newlyweds, who are longtime friends, have a lot in common. Both are "Nuyoricans" born in modest circumstances in New York to parents from Puerto Rico. Both have worked in pop music (including a duet together) and film, and become multimillionaires. Anthony, an old flame of Lopez, was granted a divorce in the Dominican Republic just last week from Puerto Rican former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres. He has two children with Torres and another from an earlier relationship. Lopez's marriage to backup dancer Cris Judd floundered just a few months after their September 2001 nuptials. Her first marriage, to Ojani Noa, ended in 1998. In addition to her marriages, the Hollywood headliner is also veteran of at least a couple of high-profile relationships with powerful men in the entertainment industry. J.Lo's 18-month-long on-again, off-again courtship with Affleck finally ended in January, after a cancelled September 2003 wedding and a movie together, "Gigli," which proved to be a critical and commercial bomb. She also had an earlier, longterm relationship with rap mogul, fashion designer and actor Sean "Puffy" Combs, who now goes by the moniker P.Diddy.
