U.S. Newswire Hispanicaction.Com Launches Initiative To Mobilize Hispanic Voters In Key Battleground States; Website A One-Stop Resource September 16, 2004 WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- HispanicAction.com, a new "527" organization, today launched a major push to increase the number of Hispanic voters in key battleground states including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Florida. The organization, founded by Joe Velasquez and Miguel Lausell and endorsed by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, is focused on registering, educating and mobilizing the more than 7.2 million Hispanics that did not vote in the 2000 elections. Under the Bush Administration, more Hispanics are unemployed and family incomes are shrinking," said Joe Velasquez, a former deputy political director during President Bill Clinton's first administration and co-founder of the organization. "Over 13 million Hispanics in the U.S. are eligible to vote this year. We will not sit this election out." According to the U.S. Census, over 13 million Hispanics are already citizens in the U.S. In 2000, almost 6 million of them were unregistered. Moreover, of the over 7 million who were registered, only 5.9 million voted in that election. "These large pools of potential Hispanic voters -- the unlikely to vote, and the unregistered -- could be the difference this year," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. "We need some strong Hispanic Action in 2004. We need to make sure that every registered voter gets to the polls this year. And after Florida in 2000, we need to make sure every vote is counted. We do not want more than a million registered Hispanics to stay home this November 2nd."
