WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- HispanicAction.com, a new "527" organization, today launched a major push to increase the number of Hispanic voters in key battleground states including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Florida.

The organization, founded by Joe Velasquez and Miguel Lausell and endorsed by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, is focused on registering, educating and mobilizing the more than 7.2 million Hispanics that did not vote in the 2000 elections.

"President Bush thinks that issuing press releases to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month is enough to show he cares. But it isn't. Under the Bush Administration, more Hispanics are unemployed and family incomes are shrinking," said Joe Velasquez, a former deputy political director during President Bill Clinton's first administration and co-founder of the organization. "Enough is enough."

"HispanicAction.com will make it easier for people to find information on how to register and to how to make sure their vote is properly cast and protected in 2004," said Velasquez. "This time we're going to make sure that our issues, our voices are heard at the polls."

"We're just seven weeks away from the most important election in history. The Administration's policies have forced more and more Hispanics into poverty. We need to take a stand," said Miguel Lausell, a top advisor to political leaders in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and co-founder of HispanicAction.com. "Over 13 million Hispanics in the U.S. are eligible to vote this year. We will not sit this election out."

According to the U.S. Census, over 13 million Hispanics are already citizens in the U.S. In 2000, almost 6 million of them were unregistered. Moreover, of the over 7 million who were registered, only 5.9 million voted in that election.

"These large pools of potential Hispanic voters -- the unlikely to vote, and the unregistered -- could be the difference this year," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. "We need some strong Hispanic Action in 2004. We need to make sure that every registered voter gets to the polls this year. And after Florida in 2000, we need to make sure every vote is counted. We do not want more than a million registered Hispanics to stay home this November 2nd."

HispanicAction.com is a clearinghouse for information important to both Hispanics and people who are interested in learning more about this important constituency. Features on the site include "Vote Now" -- a state-by-state directory of how to register to vote plus key election dates -- and "Hispanic News," with links to important news, the latest polling on the Hispanic population, and editorials by prominent Hispanics supporting this initiative such as Gov. Richardson.
