CARIBBEAN BUSINESS Puerto Rico Hosts First Medical Device Trade Exhibit In 2005 Medical Device Puerto Rico to target industry sector’s $1.8 million exporters By MARIALBA MARTINEZ January 13, 2005 The first Medical Device Puerto Rico trade exhibit and technical conference will be held Feb. 7 and 8 at Caribe Hilton Hotel & Resort, hosted by Induniv (Industry / Research Consortium) and producer Reed Exhibition’s Medical Design Technology. The trade exhibit will host buyers and suppliers from leading medical-device companies. In Puerto Rico, the medical-device sector generates 15,122 jobs, or 13% of all manufacturing jobs on the island. In fiscal year (FY) 2003, there were 67 medical-device companies on the island, which exported $1.8 million, a 28.6% increase compared to $1.4 million in FY 2002. Medical Device Puerto Rico also will offer a concurrent educational program produced by Induniv and the Center for Professional Advancement. Sessions and accredited short courses will include Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing; Managing U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Inspections; New Medical Device Reporting Rules; Precision Manufacturing; and Nanotechnology. On opening day, the keynote speaker will be Linda Kahan, FDA deputy director for the Center for Devices & Radiological Health (CDRH). Kahan will address the latest developments in the CDRH, as well as FDA compliance issues and guidance documents. Additional information is available at www.medicaldevicepuertorico.com.
