SAN JUAN - American Airlines carried more than five million passengers through Luis Munoz Marín International Airport (LMM) in 2004, approximately 500,000 more passengers than in 2003 or an increase in traffic of 11 percent, the airline reported today.

American's Cargo division transported more than 65 million pounds of freight last year, also a strong figure for San Juan.

"This March, American celebrates its 34th anniversary of service to San Juan," said Peter Dolara, American's Senior Vice President for Miami, the Caribbean and Latin America. "In 1971, American inaugurated service to San Juan from New York with six daily flights. Today, American and our regional affiliate, American Eagle, have more than 110 daily flights from San Juan, a testament to our long-standing commitment to this market. American and American Eagle have become a powerful economic engine on the island with approximately 2,300 employees."

Each year, as part of American's ongoing efforts to promote tourism to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, the airline hosts the American Airlines Caribbean TrAAvel Exchange in San Juan.

This exchange brings to San Juan approximately 1,000 travel agents from throughout the world. Participants have an opportunity to conduct meetings with targeted suppliers and tour operators in the region, attend seminars and workshops, and experience first-hand the many attractions Puerto Rico has to offer. Additionally, for the last 34 years, American has participated in cooperative advertising campaigns with major U.S. wholesalers and Puerto Rico's Department of Tourism.

These promotions have resulted in increased awareness and have helped to bring millions of visitors to the island.

In 2004, American added service from San Juan to Antigua and American Eagle added service to Nevis. American Eagle is seeking to begin daily service to Vieques and charter service to Isla Margarita, Venezuela.

To further strengthen customer service and facilitate check-in for passengers, Self Service Check-In in Spanish was launched this summer. Since adding the Spanish language capability, usage in San Juan has increased 50 percent.

"In 34 years, we have strengthened our ties with the community. We have a network that benefits Puerto Rico's important tourism industry and provides a range of convenience that only a global airline can offer," Dolara said. "By offering access to great airfares, we are giving travelers even more reasons to select American as their airline of choice."
